Charles O’Reilly – South Narrabeen SLSC
Chica, as he is known, joined South Narrabeen SLSC in 1946 when he was 16 with his two brothers Les and Michael and gained his Bronze Medallion 1947. His involvement in Surf Life Saving spans a period of some 70 years.
Chica held many positions within the Club including Club Handicapper 1959-2005 for 46 years, Club President 1971-82 some 11 years, Member of Organising Committee for 1998/99, 1999/2000 Collnarra NSW Surf Life Saving Championships. It was during his tenure as Club President that the new Clubhouse, the one standing today, albeit a few renovations since then, was built in the 1976/1977 season.
Chica was honoured with Life Membership of South Narrabeen in 1968, Distinguished Service of Branch in 1999 and then Life Membership of Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches in 2005. He is also South Narrabeen SLSC’s Life Governor. A person eligible to be appointed as Life Governors shall have been elected as a Life Member for a minimum of twelve months, still be active in some area of Club activities, and shall have given outstanding service to the Club. The position of Life Governor is for life and is an honorary position
Chica noted that it is rewarding to be a part of the Club and to be good member. One of the things he enjoyed when he was patrolling was always keeping watch on the public and the South Narrabeen members.
When asked, what were his goals within Surf Life Saving, in particular South Narrabeen SLSC? Chica replied “My goal is simple, to be there to always help OUR Club in some way.”
Chica added “I admire all LIFESAVERS especially those who get in and have A GO.”
Charles was awarded SNB Life Membership in 2005.
