Doug Menzies – Newport SLSC
When Doug joined Newport SLSC back in 1995 as an Age Manager, little did he know just how much he would become involved within the Surf Life Saving community. During his time at Newport his dedication has led him into roles such as Nipper Chairman and then President of Newport.
Doug has served in numerous club roles over his time, and slowly he became more involved in the field of Education as a Trainer and Assessor. Doug spent one year as Deputy President of the SNB Branch and then took on the top job as President in 2014. He was in that role for five years. Apart from his many other time consuming roles, simply because he loves it so much, Doug has continued to be a patrolling member and has racked up an impressive 575 career hours.
From his involvement Doug and his wife Sandy eventually set up the Special Needs Program that is run at Newport SLSC. Since it began the programme has been very successful, and has given opportunities for kids with special needs to learn about the surf and safety at the beach.
During his tenure, Doug has also served the community as a SurfCom operator. Doug has through his remarkable dedication to surf life saving been involved in shaping the future direction of rescue and lifesaving.
Throughout his time in the Surf Life Saving Community Doug has received the 10 Year Assessing Service Certificate, 10 & 15 Year National Patrol Service Award and 10 & 15 Year Training Service Certificate. Doug has been honoured to receive Life Membership at the Newport SLSC and Life Membership at SLSSNB.
Doug was awarded SNB Life Membership in 2019.
