Graeme ‘The Zom’ Knox – Collaroy SLSC

Graeme Knox, fondly referred to as “The Zom” embarked on his surf life saving journey in 1960.

Throughout the years, he was an active member of several clubs, including Freshwater, South Curly, Manly, North Narrabeen, and finally his home club Collaroy.  As an integral part of the community, Graeme initially served as a boat starter officiator in 1992 before transitioning into announcing in 1999.  His passion for the sport was undeniable, leading him to attend every boat carnival within reach, from Branch and State events to prestigious competitions like ASRL, Ocean Thunder, Aussies, and World Titles.  Known for his exceptional announcing skills, he became a well-respected figure at these events and even mentored numerous aspiring announcers, including several from the Branch.

Graeme’s contribution also extended indirectly to Branch Surf Sports through his involvement with the New South Wales League of Rowers and the ASRL.  His dedication to the development and promotion of Surf Boat Rowing as a sport significantly impacted the community.  Actively engaged in introducing new Surf Boat events, Graeme inspired crews from every club within the Branch to refine their abilities and partake in the sport, ensuring that advancements benefited both the SNB community and the sport as a whole.

In recognition of his remarkable dedication and service, Graeme was honoured with several prestigious accolades, including the SLSA Official 20 Year Service Award, Club: 20 Year Officiating Service, 25 & 50 Year Long Service, and 25 Year National Patrol Service.  Additionally, he created the “Between the Flags” column in the Manly Daily newspaper, which celebrated the achievements of new Bronze Medallion members from all clubs, a gesture that left a lasting positive impact on the community.

Graeme was awarded SNB Life Membership in 2020.
