Harry Ragan – Avalon Beach SLSC
Harry originally joined the Surf Life Saving organisation in 1932 as a member of the Merewether Club where he gained his Bronze Medallion. Harry held the roles of Vice-Captain and Chief Instructor at Merewether from 1938-40 and was enlisted in the Army for service from 1940-45.
After his Army Service he joined Avalon SLSC in 1946 where he held the position of Club Captain for 8 years. Harry was awarded Club Life Membership with Avalon in 1952, became Club President in 1958 and held that role for three years initially and then returned to the role in 1961 for another 3 years.
Harry was Delegate for Sydney Branch to Head Centre and State Centre Councils from 1947-60, he was Manly Warringah Branch Executive Member from 1960 to 1961, Assistant Registrar from 1960 to 1961, Branch Registrar from 1961 to 1969. Harry has been a member of many committees since the formation of the Branch in 1959 and assisted at most of the Branch Carnivals over the years.
Harry gave a lifetime to surf life saving, firstly as a competitor and then as an official and administrator and was an integral part of the Board of Examiners. Harry Ragan was awarded Life Member of Avalon Beach SLSC in 1952, Manly Warringah Branch in 1968 and NSW State Centre in 1973.
The Avalon Beach SLSC in memory of their late Life Member Harry Ragan originally funded the SNB Annual award for Outstanding Service by a Board of Examiner Member. The highly prestigious award still remains the Harry Ragan Outstanding Service Award.
Harry passed away in April 1974 shortly before he was to be formally presented with his State Life Membership badge. His wife Patsie accepted the award on his behalf.
Harry was awarded SNB Life Membership in 1969.
