Peter Daley

Peter Thomas Daley – Queenscliff SLSC

Peter joined Metropolitan Caloundra Queensland in 1970 and was awarded his Bronze Medallion in the same year. Peter was the First Aid Officer for two years and Boat Sweep/Captain for three years. Metropolitan Caloundra have spoken highly of Peter whilst a member of that Club, particularly as a Boat Sweep and General Club Member. 1972 saw Peter win the Queensland Newspaper Pulitzer Prize for Journalism.

Peter moved down the coast in 1976 and joined Queenscliff SLSC. Peter held the role of Deputy President for one year and Club President for 12 years. He has been on numerous committees over the years and was Captain of the Queenscliff Touring Team to Japan in 1990/91.  Peter received Life Membership of Queenscliff in 1999. He was a Boat Official at Club, State and Australian Championships and Coach of the SNB touring Team in 1992/93.

The best example of Peter’s passion for his Club was when he went to the Philippines in 2011 with good mate and fellow clubbie Jim Young to retrieve a Club shark bell that was discovered there by a resident of the Northern Beaches. The bell was originally stolen from the Club in 1972.

Peter didn’t have a bad word to say about anyone and, more importantly, nobody had a bad word to say about Peter. His family was his priority, closely followed by the surf club.

The Peter Daley Tertiary Scholarship was named in memory of Peter which was originally named the John Cunningham scholarship. John Cunningham put the offer of the name change to the Club and Peter’s family and was named to honour him and his commitment to the betterment of the kids growing up with Queenscliff in their veins.

Peter was passionate about everything, but especially the personal development of his charges. He was instrumental in getting the scholarship underway as well as being on the selection committee every year. Peter also supported the scholarship financially himself in an effort to boost the coffers.

Peter was awarded SNB Life Membership in 2002.

Peter passed away on July 17th, 2014. He was aged 68.
