Public Health Update for Surf Sports

NSW Public Health have confirmed for the Northern area of the Northern Beaches, the situation regarding surf sports and training  is unchanged from when the current restrictions that were first put in place prior to Christmas. The area is operating under Public Health (COVID-19 Northern Beaches) Order 2020,  and as per Part 3 Section 9 of this order –

  (1) The Minister directs that a person must not participate in an outdoor public gathering of more than 2 persons
  (3) This clause does not apply to the following—

(h) a gathering for the purposes of exercise or outdoor recreation in the Northern area if—
          (i) all persons participating in the gathering are Northern area residents, and
(ii) no more than 5 persons participate in the gathering.

Unfortunately under this Public Order, exercise would exclude training in surf boats, as this is defined as “training for a community sporting activity” (see below). This Public Health Order was updated as of January 2nd and will be revised on Saturday January 9th.

For the Southern area of the Northern Beaches, the area is now following the same rules as Greater Sydney, and is operating under Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order (No 7) 2020. This order allows for all forms of surf sports training, including training in surf boats.

Training is called out under the definitions section of this Public Health order as follows – “community sporting activity includes a training session for a community sporting activity”

Given the heightened publicity around the Northern Beaches over the past month due to COVID, we ask that everyone takes the above information on board and does the right thing. Please continue to use caution and common sense with all activities, and stay safe.
