Alan Slevin

Alan Slevin*

Until 1967, it was generally accepted that the Club was formed in 1930. Alan, who wrote the Annual Report for the 1967/68 season, stated on page 16 that the ‘inaugural meeting actually took place sometime in 1925’.

Where he got that information is unclear, but it was verified in the published Club history in 2002. Geoff Small, a member of the first Bronze Medallion squad in 1926 and son of the founder A.J. Small, confirmed this in 1984 with Club Historian Geoff Searl.

Alan (also known as slippery) was awarded his Bronze Medallion on 12 December 1948.

In the 1949/50 Season he was awarded his Instructor’s Certificate and held the position of House Captain.

During the 1951/52 season, he served the Club as Chief Instructor, and it is recorded in several Annual Reports that he assisted the Chief Instructor of the time.

During 1953/54 season and for some years afterwards he was listed as a Senior Active member and he served as a Senior Vice-President well into the 1960s.

From the 1957/58 season and into the 1960s he was a member of the Board of Examiners and was listed in the Annual reports as an Active Reserve member. At the Annual Carnival on 28 January 1962, he was Starter for water events and a judge for the R&R event. For a time he also coached the R&R team.

He served as Hon. Secretary in 1967/68 season and the following year. By 1970 he had served a total of 7 years as Club Delegate to Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern beaches (SLSSNB) after which time Michael Byrnes took over.

He was granted his 25 years Service Bar in 1972.

In 1974 he was awarded Life Membership of SLSSNB

In 1969 Alan was awarded Life Membership of the Club

Alan was awarded SNB Life Membership in 1974.
