John Swan – Freshwater SLSC

John Swan’s journey with Freshwater SLSC began in 1967, he completed his bronze medallion a few years later on December 7, 1969.  John’s involvement in the club started at a young age when he initially joined the Gear Committee during his early 20’s.  His dedication and leadership qualities shone through when, at the age of 23, he was appointed as the Boat Vice Captain and Club Vice Chairman.  These experiences prepared him for the role of Club President, a position he held for 13 years.  During his presidency, John played a pivotal role in growing and developing the club, as well as managing it’s 1200 members and 397 active patrollers at the time.

Throughout his time with Freshwater SLSC, John represented his club in various capacities, including serving as a coach and a keen competitor, with surf boat racing being his favourite event.  He also served as one of the club’s trustees  and as a member of the carnival committee, helping to plan and organise carnivals for his club.  John’s service extended to the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch as part of the Branch Building Committee.

John’s 44 years of dedicated service to SLS and his club were acknowledged with the 25 year SLSA Patrol Service Award in 1992 and Life Membership to Freshwater in 2000.  In recognition of his invaluable contributions to SNB, John was honoured with SNB Life Membership in 2011.
