Edward Joseph Whittaker* – North Narrabeen SLSC
As much as Ted Whittaker loved rowing surf boats, he always made sure North Narrabeen Surf Club had money in the coffers. His ability to raise funds for the Club was exceptional. Ted earned the nickname “golliwog’’ because of his tough, rather angular body and tousled dark hair. He joined the Club in the 1956/57 season and gained his Bronze Medallion within the season. He gained his Instructor’s Certificate the following season and later his Examiner’s Certificate.
Ted was a Foundation Member of the Manly Warringah Juvenile Surf Life Saving Association in 1965/66. He was a member of the Board of Examiners as a District Supervisor, surf boat starter at all Championships and a judge in the board and ski areas at local carnivals. Ted was also a member of the Branch Liaison Committee to Warringah Shire Council.
Ted was a Life Member of North Narrabeen Surf Club and Sydney Northern Beaches Branch and received his 50-year Long Service Award in the 2006/07 season. One of the highlights of his surf boat rowing career was winning the Australian Interstate Championship with the North Narrabeen Open crew at North Cronulla in the 1967/68 season.
Ted would always say: “The beach comes first.’’
Edward was awarded SNB Life Membership in 2003.
Edward passed away on January 6, 2015. He was aged 75.
