Hector McDonald OAM – Collaroy SLSC
Hector gained his Bronze Medallion in 1946 with Collaroy SLSC and his Instructors Certificate in 1948. Hector held many positions in the Collaroy Club including assisting with the organisation of the 1964 Australian titles and 1987 State titles.
It was a natural progression that Hector became the inaugural Superintendent of this Branch from 1959 until 1968. He later held the position of Branch President for four years from 1989 to 1993.
Hector initially joined the Sydney Branch Board of Examiners in 1952, was Superintendent of the North Side for Sydney Branch 1955-56 and has been Superintendent for Manly Warringah Branch since its formation.
He was awarded Manly Warringah Branch Life Membership in 1968, SLSNSW Life Membership in 1968 and SLSA Life Membership in 1970. Hector was a foundation delegate to the World Council of Lifesaving and was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1971 for service to surf life saving and the community.
Hector was a legend – “64th Annual Report of Surf Lifesaving Australia states “Mr McDonald is one of the best known practical Lifesaving Officials in Australia today”
Hector once said “The Surf Life Saving movement is an association I have respected and loved all my life.”
Hector McDonald served his Country with the 2nd/1st Australian Anti-Tank Regiment in New Guinea and served that Association as its Secretary of 50 years Community Service.
Hector was awarded SNB Life Membership in 1968.
Hector passed away on April 30th, 2002.
