Owen Ramsey – Whale Beach SLSC
Owen became a member of the Whale Beach SLSC in 1945, earning his Bronze Medallion in 1948 and Instructor’s Certificate in 1953. Throughout his tenure, he held several pivotal positions, including Vice Captain (1956-1957), Board and Ski Captain (1949-1958), Lifesaving Secretary (1948-1969), and Vice President (1956-1996).
Owen’s extensive involvement extended to the Whale Beach SLSC Management Committee (1949-1969) and the Meritorious Awards Committee, serving for 12 consecutive years.
Owen’s contributions also included various branch positions, such as a five-year stint on the Branch Judiciary Committee and a year as the Team Manager for the SNB Branch Team. Additionally, he served as an examiner for the Sydney Branch in 1960.
Owen’s dedication to lifesaving reached an international scale, serving as a member of the Branch Instructional Team to the Philippines from 1979 to 1983. He acted as the NSW State Liaison Officer for South Africa in 1966/1967 and 1970/1971. Furthermore, he officiated at the NSW State Championships from 1960 to 2003 and took on the role of Craft starter at 28 Australian Championships. In recognition of his outstanding service, Owen was honoured with Life Membership status by SLS NSW in 2000.
Owen’s exemplary service earned him Life Membership at the Whale Beach SLSC in 1963, and he was inducted into the SNB Life Membership in 1978, solidifying his lasting impact and influence within the surf lifesaving community.
Owen was awarded SNB Life Membership in 1978.
Owen passed away in 2003. He was aged 73
